It is with joy and gladness of the heart to see and announce that works have recommenced on the wonderful pedestrian bridge project at MCC junction, opposite Awada city of Onitsha. The project, which was initiated by the past governor of Anambra State, Chief Peter Obi, was abandoned by the contractor immediately after the change of leadership in the State; later citing payment issues as an excuse.
According to our source, the project was at 80% completion stage before being abandoned. And the contractor of the bridge has turned deaf ears to the many requests from the current governor, Chief Willie Obiano, to have the project completed; insisting on getting paid in full before putting the finishing touches to the bridge. It is learnt that when completed, the pedestrian bridge would be the best of its kind in Nigeria but at the moment, it has become a death trap and has claimed over 10 lives. This has prompted the governor to give instructions to the State Works Ministry to see to the completion of the project via direct labour.
Speaking with the Senior Special Adviser (SSA) to the Governor on Works and related matters, Chief Emeka Okoye, he confirmed that completion works has commenced at the bridge. According to him, the Governor wanted to works on the bridge finished before the Easter break but due to logistics, as some of the required materials are coming from abroad, they are experiencing some slight delays. But he assured that be as it may, the works on the bridge should be finished and the bridge ready for use by the first week of April, 2016.
This is another abandoned project of the past leadership being taken over and seen to completion by the present leadership in the State, to show consistency, commitment and true leadership. Thanks to the visionary leadership of our present governor, Chief Willie Obiano (Akpokuedike).
